Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario – Have you been discriminated against?

Ontario strives to ensure that everyone is treated equally in various sectors, including but not limited to employment and accommodations.  The Ontario Human Rights Code was enacted in 1962 and ensures all people have equal rights and prevents individuals from being discriminated against.

The Code provides sixteen prohibited grounds of discrimination which are:

• age;
• race;
• citizenship;
• ethnic origin;
• place of origin;
• creed;
• disability;
• family status;
• marital status,
• gender identity and expression;
• receipt of public assistance;
• record of offences;
• sex, and sexual orientation.

A common area of where the Code protects individuals against discrimination is in the workplace. Employers are bound to ensure no one is discriminated against in the work place. 

Employers also have the ongoing duty to accommodate in most circumstances.  For example, an employer cannot deny a qualified employee a promotion solely due to their race.

The Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario deals with claims that arise from discrimination. If you believe you have been discriminated against,  you can file with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO).
